Innovating Not Sacrificing for the Environment: Our Approach to Green Design

June 4, 2024

In a world where sustainability is paramount, every decision regarding construction and outfitting spaces carries significant environmental implications.

From businesses revamping office layouts to individuals redesigning their living spaces, the choices made today will inevitably shape the world of tomorrow. We are advocates for environmental responsibility and our Bureau Booths offer innovative and sustainable solutions for the spaces people live and work in.

But it's not just about providing green solutions; it's about raising awareness too. We want our customers to understand the environmental implications of their choices and how our Bureau Booths offer a sustainable approach to building new spaces.

The Environmental Footprint of Internal Construction

Internal construction, while essential for creating functional spaces, often comes with a hefty environmental cost. According to a report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP),

the building and construction sector is responsible for a staggering 37% of global emissions, making it the largest emitter of greenhouse gasses.

This figure highlights the critical need for sustainable alternatives within the construction industry.

When we think about the materials typically used in internal construction—concrete, steel, and various composite materials—all of which have high embodied energy and carbon footprints. Concerningly, concrete production alone accounts for approximately 8% of global carbon emissions.

It’s also important to note that the environmental impact doesn't stop at construction.

The deconstruction phase also contributes significantly, as materials frequently aren't efficiently recycled or repurposed, but rather end up in landfills. When businesses undergo renovations, the process often involves tearing down existing structures, disposing of materials, and installing new fixtures. Each step in this cycle contributes to landfill waste and carbon emissions.

Bureau Booths: A Sustainable Alternative

In contrast to the usual ways we build spaces, our Bureau Booths presents a greener alternative. They focus on being environmentally friendly while still delivering on functionality and style. Our booth solutions are designed with modularity and longevity in mind, lessening waste and maximising lifespan.

Bureau Booths are constructed using eco-friendly materials and manufacturing processes. From recycled steel frames to sustainable wood panels, every component is chosen with careful consideration of its environmental footprint. Also, one of the best parts, if you need to move, the booths can move with you. They can be uninstalled and reinstalled at a new location when needed.

We aim to reduce our carbon footprint and promote a sustainable future by prioritising renewable resources and minimising waste during our production process.

One of the key advantages of our Bureau Booths is our end-of-life program, which aims to prevent booth disposal in landfills. Through this program, we facilitate the refurbishment, repurposing, or recycling of the booths at the end of their lifecycle. By extending the lifespan of our products and diverting them from landfills, we significantly reduce their environmental impact.

The Environmental Impact in Numbers

To provide a clearer picture of the environmental impact of internal construction versus Bureau Booths, let's delve into the numbers:

  • CO2 Emissions: Traditional internal construction methods contribute significantly to CO2 emissions, with concrete production alone accounting for approximately 8% of global emissions. But here's where we shine: our Bureau Booths are all about reducing CO2 emissions by using eco-friendly materials and processes from start to finish.

  • Landfill Waste: The process of refitting and de-fitting spaces results in significant landfill waste, as materials are frequently not effectively recycled or repurposed. Did you know that Australia's construction sector generates a whopping 27 million tonnes of waste? That’s 44% of all waste generated throughout the country! In contrast, our Bureau Booths' end-of-life program aims to prevent booth disposal in landfills by facilitating refurbishment, repurposing, or recycling.

  • Resource Consumption: Traditional construction methods rely heavily on finite resources such as concrete and steel, contributing to resource depletion and environmental degradation–construction uses 32% of the world's natural resources. Here’s where our Bureau Booths do things differently, they’re made with sustainable materials and modular design, minimising resource consumption and maximising longevity.

Educating for a Sustainable Future

We’re big believers in the power of education when it comes to shaping a more sustainable future. By shedding light on the environmental impact of internal construction and offering sustainable alternatives, we want to empower businesses and individuals to make informed decisions that align with their values and contribute to a healthier planet.

Together, we can build a greener, more sustainable world—one booth at a time.
